Time Lords Compass Puzzle PDF Print E-mail
Materials: 80 feet of string, 37 wooden pegs and a mallet.

Directions: In ancient times, the Time Lord took compass readings of a star constellation during her travels. The point of this activity is to discover constellations. Campers can work in groups of about six and will need approximately 30 minutes to accomplish the activity’s goal. A peg is put into the ground as a starting point, and a string is then tied around the peg. Stand behind the starting peg and face North. Groups then follow the list of bearings. They continue to tie the string around each peg, keeping the string tight. (Note: each unit of measure is the length of a foot). Campers then follow this list of bearings: 1W; 1NW; 1N; 6NE; 4N; 3SW; 1W; 1NW; 1N; 5NE; 1NW; 2N; 1NW; 1N; 1NE; 1E; 1SE; 2E; 1NE; 1E; 1SE; 2E; 1NE; 1E; 1SE; 1S; 1SW; 2S; 1SW; 5SE; 1S; 1SW; 1W; 3NW; 4S; 6SE; 1S; 1SW; 1W; 6NW; 6SW. The last bearing (i.e., 6SW) should return campers to the starting peg and the constellation will be revealed.
